Reed Elsevier Singapore and Melrose Children’s Home
During 2008 RE Cares Month, 20 volunteers from Reed Elsevier businesses in Singapore paid a visit to their adopted charity over many years, Melrose Children’s Home. The objective was to motivate and excite the children in preparing well for their examinations.
Volunteers wore the honourable achievement medals, showing the children what they can win at the annual awards ceremony at the end of the year with good or improved academic performance.
Volunteers organised study groups and play groups. One study group gathered in the library to read books aloud. The play groups included a soccer match and games like Twister. A drama class was also a feature of the day for interested students, helping develop their confidence and verbal skills.
Visitors and children enjoyed a buffet dinner to cap off the day.
“I have won a few medals for the past few years and I want to improve in all my subjects for this year and aim for the Gold Medal! I think I can do it!” A Melrose Children’s Home resident.
