Breakdown of GHG Protocol performance by scope

We achieved a 22% absolute reduction in Scope 1 emissions between 2003 and 2008, primarily due to better fuel management. Increases in energy demand at our data centres led to an 8% increase in absolute Scope 2 emissions, with the equivalent of 22% reduction when normalised – tonnes of CO2 divided by EBITDA. Scope 3 emissions which had been rising over the previous four years, have been balanced by a considerable decrease in 2008 emissions.
